Support for Educators and Students
Educators in both public and private settings are working hard to balance their available resources against an increase in the display of classroom and school-wide behaviours of concern. While the percentage of students whose concerning behaviours rise to the level of being disruptive or worse is relatively small, the impact within the classroom or the entire school is often extensive.
Behavioural Resources Australia has a range of services available in support of educators, and the students and families they serve. Clients work directly with Dan Petro, whose professional roles have included working as a behavioural trainer in homes, in a special education settings as a school counsellor, social skills instructor and site administrator, and as a university lecturer.
Dan's work supports students from infant and toddler ages, through teens and young-adults. These students often have learning and/or developmental disabilities that range from mild to severe, and behaviours of concern that range from withdrawn to assaultive. Services can often include conducting Functional Behavioural Assessments (FBA) and developing Behaviour Support Plans, then providing implementation training and follow-up support. Dan is also well versed in working with typical students of all ages.
Dan has provided evidence-based professional services in over 200 Australian schools and organisations over the last decade. Regardless if developing a program for an individual student, a classroom or an entire school, Dan utilises a customised approach with an emphasis on increasing the child's independence, including training adults in the use of positive behavioural supports for effectively preventing and responding to behaviour of concern situations.
Much of the instructional content Dan uses comes from course material he developed as an adjunct faculty member at universities in California. The graduate courses he taught included Dynamics of Behaviour Change, Behaviour Management in the Classroom, Advanced Behaviour Analysis, and Crisis Counselling.
Dan has also testified in criminal court proceedings as an expert witness in support of individuals with disabilities.
